The Monastery of Theotokos Palaeokatritsa lies approximately 25 km northwest of the city of Kerkyra.
It is constructed on one side of the bay with the same name, which attracts a great number of visitors, due to its exceptional natural beauty. The view from the monastery is spectacular.
The monastery was founded in the beginning of the 13th century, although the building facilities that one sees today were made at a later date, due to successive devastations caused by foreign conquerors and invaders.
At the monastery there is the sacred icon of Virgin Mary (Theotokos), which was found miraculously, as well as a small but interesting museum with Byzantine and Post-Byzantine icons and other religious relics.
The Monastery celebrates on August 15th, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and on Friday of the Bright or Renewal Week (the week from Easter Sunday to the following Sunday), the day of the Life-Giving Spring.
