The Byzantine castle dominates on the top of the hill, over the large village of Volissos, at a strategic location with an amazing view and the ability to protect the whole northwest part of Chios. It was probably built in the 11th century and was constructed by the Genovese in the 15th century. However, tradition considers it the work of the 6th century and relates it to the general of Justinian, Belisarius. It is has a trapezoid with six circular towers on the corners and at its interior there were some buildings and reservoirs, which today is in ruins. It is built with local stone with special dark color, well preserved and is open to visitors
